Historic Barn Renovation
Renovation & Home Expansion of Former Dairy Barn
Litchfield County, Connecticut
Nestled amidst serene landscapes, a 19th-century barn stood weathered by time, a silent witness to the passage of history. Inspired by the vision of our client—an avid gardener with a love for the past—we embarked on a journey to breathe new life into this structure, blending its heritage with contemporary sensibilities.
Central to the future vision was the notion of space and light. By opening up the structure, we invited the surrounding vistas to become part of the interior landscape, infusing the space with a sense of airiness and connection to the outdoors.
A wall of new sliding doors capped with transom windows brings natural light in and offers easy access to the outdoors. We guarded against too much light with the addition of motorized solar-protected roller shades.
Other design elements included building an addition to accommodate a new entryway, kitchen, powder bath & daily household storage needs. To gain access to the upper floor we designed an inviting oak staircase.
Our approach was one of reverence and restraint. Mindful of the barn's historical significance. Even the original cow barn stalls on the lower ground level were preserved, paying homage to the toil of generations past.
Solar panels adorned the roof, quietly harnessing the power of the sun, a testament to our commitment to responsible design. Finally, a portion of the lower level was converted to a two car garage.
In the heart of this revitalized space, the new modern amenities offer a nod to sustainability, seamlessly integrated into the historic framework, offering both comfort and eco-consciousness. The space was infused with a modern update, marrying classic barn elements with a sleek, contemporary design. A harmonious blend of old and new—a home that honored its past while embracing the possibilities of the future. Here, amidst the grand open spaces and sweeping views, history found a new lease on life—a reminder of the enduring power of architectural reinvention. As the sun sets, we reflect on the journey that brought us here—a journey marked by passion, creativity, and a deep respect for the the origins of our client’s new home.
